West University Elementary students and families donated more than 37,000 pounds of canned goods and nonperishable items to the Houston Food Bank, as part of their annual participation in the Souper Bowl of Caring.
The focus for 2015 was to bring in more high protein foods, and the students responded to the challenge with donations of canned tuna fish and other high-protein foods.
The drive, which was chaired this year by Leslie Wade, was conducted from January 26 through January 30. Students collected food items each day and volunteers weighed the contributions by class.
West U Elementary was the top school in the nation last year in the annual Souper Bowl of Caring. In 2014, WUES raised just over 30,000 pounds of food.
