With less than two weeks left until Superintendent Terry Grier retires, the Houston ISD board named an interim superintendent Wednesday and switched search firms to help locate its next leader.
Ken Huewitt, HISD’s chief financial officer, will serve in the temporary role. He has been with the district since 2002, and has also served as deputy superintendent since summer of 2015, when Grier gave him broader administrative responsibilities.
After questions had been raised about the zeal and history of the search firm hired by the board in a split vote in December, trustees ended that relationship – with Iowa-based Ray & Associates.
Right away, the board voted to begin talks with HYA & Associates, based in Illinois, which was one of four firms that the board interviewed last November to help conduct its search.
The board has set July as the deadline for hiring a new superintendent, after working with the search firm to conduct a survey and community meetings on developing a candidate profile. That profile will be utilized in recruiting candidates.
