Consultants to the West U Zoning and Planning Commission have stepped up their work on a proposed rewrite of the city’s zoning ordinance for non-single family properties in West U.
At a recent workshop meeting with ZPC chair Richard Wilson, members of the council expressed their desire to get the commercial zoning revision done by next spring.
Public Works Director Chris Peifer, who is on a special steering committee working with consultants from Kendig Keast Collaborative (KKC), said a new preliminary calendar for the project has been proposed.
Members of the steering committee are Wilson and Peifer, as well as Sam Parikh, Lauren Griffith, Marshall Clinkscales, Bruce Frankel, West U Contract Administrator Gerardo Barrera and City Planner Debbie Scarcella.
The calendar will give the West U Council — and West U residents — several opportunities to provide input on the rezoning effort.
The Steering Committee will meet Wednesday, August 13, at 4 p.m., to discuss the first phase of the draft of the new code language. The Zoning and Planning Committee will then meet Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. to receive and be briefed on the Final Directions Report from KKC.
Both meetings will be held at the West U Municipal Building, xx University Blvd.
The draft calendar, which is subject to change, includes meetings on:
September 11, 2014, 4 p.m.
The Steering Committee will meet to discuss Phase II Code Language Draft and revisions from Phase I. The ZPC also will meet, at 6:15 p.m., to update the draft of the proposed Code Language.
Other meetings may be held, if necessary, on:
September 29, 2014
An afternoon Town Hall Meeting #1 will be held in the afternoon, where the proposed zoning changes will be presented for feedback.
An Evening Town Hall Meeting #2 will be held for the same reason.
October 9, 2014
At 6:15 p.m., the Steering Committee will consider and present their draft Final Version of the Zoning Code.
October 31, 2014

Depending upon the rescheduling of Council meetings during the for the holiday season, there will be a request for a joint public hearing to be held in January, 2015.
The draft calendar includes a January 12, 2015 meeting for a joint public hearing with the City Council and the Zoning and Planning Commission. The hearing will be conducted on the preliminary report and proposed changes to the zoning code.
Either immediately after the public hearing, or during the next week, The ZPC will meet to discuss the public comments, make revisions if necessary and write a final report for the City Council.
The council meetings scheduled include:
A January 26, 2015 meeting of the City Council, for a final report from the ZPC and possible first reading of zoning ordinance amendments. At the next council meeting, on February 9, 2015, the council will consider the second reading of possible amendments to the zoning ordinance.
