The Harris County Medical Examiner has taken over the investigation into the death of a man early Friday evening on the Union Pacific Railroad tracks that divide West University and Bellaire, but friends and family on social media indicate the death may have been a suicide.

The man, identified as 36-year-old Brady Patrick Nelson of Berkeley, Calif., was reportedly hit on his bicycle just before 5 p.m. at the Bissonnet Street crossing. Tricia Bentley, spokesperson for the medical examiner’s office, said although Nelson was killed outright, the cause of death was listed as “pending.”

Houston Police Department spokesman Victor Senties said motorists stopped at the crossing indicated that Nelson was coming eastbound on Bissonnet. They reported he avoided the crossing arms at the track, which is also equipped with protective devices that come with being a horn-free federal “quiet zone.”

The train was reportedly stopped on the tracks, blocking the heavily traveled Richmond Avenue crossing during rush hour, while the investigation continued from Bissonnet to Westpark Drive.

From social media accounts, Nelson was a longtime triathlete. The Oakland Triathlon Club posted the following message on Facebook from his family, indicating he had suffered a critical injury earlier this year and suffered from depression:

“We lost our dear Brady yesterday. After battling back physically from his life-threatening cycling accident on St. Patrick’s Day, the battle back from post-traumatic brain injury depression proved too great.”

A post from the club said, “I cannot begin to tell you what a tragic loss this is. Brady was truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. …Brady, I hope you have found peace brother. You are already missed.”
