The West University Elementary School Foundation has completed its $250,000 fundraising drive to rebuild the front playground at West U Elementary, president Adrienne Vanderbloemen said Wednesday.

“We are overwhelmed by the generosity of businesses in our community such as Cleburne Cafeteria, West U Fit and TAM International, along with families at West University Elementary School, who have rallied to help us restore the most used playground in West U to a safe and fun place for our children to play,” Vanderbloemen said.

The Foundation invited families of children attending West U Elementary to eat dinner at Cleburne Cafeteria Wednesday evening, where a rendering of the new playground equipment was on display. Vanderbloemen said the event was always a way to thank George Mickelis, the owner of the cafeteria, for his generous support of the Foundation’s fundraising efforts.

Cleburne Cafeteria donated $25,000 to the foundation’s fundraising effort this year. Mickelis donated $25,000 when the playground was originally renovated in 2000.

West U kindergartener Molly Jones said she will enjoy the new playground at her school.

Vanderbloemen also thanked other generous corporate sponsors, as well as the families at West U Elementary who supported the Foundation with donations.

West U Fitness and Tam International each donated $10,000 to the campaign to rebuild the playground.

West U Principal John Threet and many West U families enjoyed dinner and conversation at the event, and several students said they looked forward to the new playground.

“A poured-in place rubber base will replace the old wood chip fall surface that is currently there.  We hope to begin the project in June so that it will be ready for the beginning of school in August,” Vanderbloemen said.
