Houston ISD Supt. Terry Grier announced late Thursday that he’ll be leaving the district at the end of his contract in March 2016.
Grier, 64, said he was not retiring but cited one knee replacement that has him walking with a cane and another coming in November as slowing him down. He was flanked by the school board as he made his announcement.
With supportive trustee Paula Harris not running for re-election and other seats up for grabs in the Nov. 3 election, some observers wondered whether Grier would have the votes needed
for another contract extension.
The often controversial leader came to HISD in 2009 from San Diego, Calif.
