The City of West University Place will hold two public hearings on a proposal to increase property taxes by 3.65 percent.

Your property taxes may increase at a greater or lesser rate, or even decrease, depending on the change in the taxable value of your property in relation to the change in taxable value of all other property and the tax rate that is adopted.

The first public hearing will be held on October 5, 2015 at 06:30 PM at Municipal Building Council Chamber at 3800 University Boulevard, West University Place, Texas.

The second public hearing will be held on October 12, 2015 at 06:30 PM at Municipal Building Council Chamber at 3800 University Boulevard, West University Place, Texas.

“Acceptance of the Certified Appraisal Roll from the Harris County Appraisal District. According to HCAD, the 2015 tax roll for West University Place is $5,085,147,282, an increase from 2014 of 5.57 percent.”

Seems the taxing public of West U is funding the city by ~5% more this year than last year (give or take from exemptions from valuations). This council is asking for even more on top of that? In this economy? This is belt tightening time. Time to get ahead of any potential contractions in valuations – not to go setting a new high mark for baseline spending that we may not be able to keep next year.

Please attend and voice a big NO for this one.

    “Hearings”? Pointless. Who listens???

Raise taxes to pay severances, hire search firms and pay for Burt’s park.

You are correct sir! Their minds are made up before anything is done. Look at spending enormous amounts of money on attorney fees. One attorney, paid to fight the church, had a Hatteras on the main page of his computer. With West U money, he could probably buy another model of Hatteras! Search firms aren’t hired yet, but should be. Burt’s park will be expensive. And all citizens want is open green space! Don’t clutter up open green spaces so the Parks Director can manage something. Most of the parks are not used by West U citizens consistently. If citizens were smart, we would support No tax increases, No recycling that cost money & is a double tax on citizens, & accepting county funds to help pay for things. I just hope next election, we get better leadership!

With the continued growth in West U. property values and the continued replacement of small older homes with large new ones, why is there any need to consider a tax increase?

There should be NO tax increase! Instead, raise the 65 property tax exemption. The staff have “gold standard” services. The citizens don’t. The people with flooding issues don’t have “gold standard”. All of the parks are geared towards children, not Seniors. Seniors could fall on the gravel in the parks. Do they think Seniors don’t like Nature? The city staff has a “gold standard” medical plan. What are the citizens getting, the shaft? We really do not have good fiduciaries. We need leader who have the citizens best interest at heart. We do not have that now!
