Drivers should expect major traffic delays in the Bellaire area this morning due to an overturned 18-wheeler on IH 610.

At 5:43 a.m. an accident occurred at 5200 IH 610 Northbound; an 18-wheeler rolled over after striking the barrels and a small portion of methanol leaked out. The spill has been contained by the fire department.

The freeway remains shut down while the Bellaire Police Department, Bellaire Fire Department and Houston Fire Department Hazmat and heavy duty wreckers work to clear the accident scene.

It may take several hours for the tanker to be removed, as its rear wheels were severed during the accident and the tanker is slightly over the edge of the retaining wall.

Houston police, Metro, TXDOT, and West University are also assisting on this scene.

Good grief. All of 610 traffic is STILL log jammed outside my house. I know the street doesn’t belong to me, but it still annoying to have to wait for cut through traffic to let me out of my own driveway.
