Local News

The city of West University Place invites the community to participate in the Town Hall meetings about the city’s parks and recreation facilities and programs on October 20 and November 20. The Citizen Survey results, based on the responses to a Parks Master Planning survey of all West U residents earlier this year, also will be discussed.
The Town Hall meetings and an open presentation to the city council will provide residents with a venue for open public dialogue, where opinions can be discussed.
The survey results, in conjunction with community input, will be used to assist the citizen’s Parks Master Planning Task Force and the City of West University Place Parks and Recreation Department in gathering information that will guide short and long- range goals over the next 10-15 years.
The parks and recreation department and citizen’s Parks Master Planning Task Force is working with White Oak Studio in updating the Parks Master Plan. The city’s current Parks and Open Space Master Plan dates back to November 2000.
The Town Hall meetings will be held on Monday, October 20 at 6:30 p.m. and on Thursday, November 20 at 6:30 p.m. Both meetings will be held in the Community Building auditorium, located at 6104 Auden.
Next year, there will be a presentation to the West U City Council. That meeting is scheduled to be held on Monday, March 2, 2015, at 6:30 p.m.
The 2014 Parks Master Planning Survey Results and additional survey data are available at www.westutx.gov/parksmasterplan.

*More than half of residents (56 percent) use at least one West U park at least once a month.
*A majority (89 percent) agree that West U parks provide safe places to play and exercise.
*A majority (87 percent) agree that parks are well-maintained.
*A majority (82 percent) say members of their household can easily walk to a West U park.
*About half (44 percent) agree that West U should have more open, unstructured green space.
*Less than half (45 percent) indicated they are neutral on acquiring more parkland.
