YMCA Open House Aimed At Helping Seniors Stay Active

October 20, 2008

The Weekley Family YMCA is encouraging seniors to get moving by participating in a free, citywide health, fitness and fun Open House from 9a.m.-noon Oct. 29, at the YMCA, 7101 Stella Link.

“The aging of the U.S. population is one of the major public health challenges we face in the 21st century,” says the Center for Disease Control’s Julie Louise Gerberding.

“Regular exercise combined with socializing and engaging activities can lead to improved health benefits for older adults,” said Joann Donnelly, YMCA director of total health. “It’s important to strengthen not just your muscles, but the whole person—spirit, mind and body.”

Activities during the open house include tours of the facility, exercise demonstrations, information on volunteerism, health and wellness tips from our own staff experts and more.

The Weekley Family YMCA offers Active Older Adult programs that encourage seniors to get moving through activities like water aerobics, weight training, pot luck dinners, trips, volunteering, dance classes, bridge clubs and more.
