WULL Seniors Advance to Championship Game
The West U Little League Seniors will play in the championship game of the Senior Little League World Series Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
West U pitcher John Doxakis threw a complete shutout to carry the WULL Seniors to a 7-0 victory over the host team from Bangor, Maine.
Doxakis threw nine strikeouts in just seven innings. Doxakis and his teammates allowed no runs on two hits, to keep the hometown team off the scoreboard.
It was a 1-run game Friday until the 6th inning, when the WULL Seniors offense exploded with 6 runs in the top of 6th inning.
The Southwest Champs scored in the sixth on an RBI double by Carson Maxwell, an RBI double by Jacob Millender, an RBI single by Joe Gobillot, a two-run double by William James, and an RBI single by Aaron Cranfield.
James also had two extra-base hits for the Seniors.
Jimmy Winston and James, who teamed up for five hits and two RBIs, sparked the Seniors.
This is the fourth trip to the Senior World Series for the WULL Seniors, including the 2009 World Series Championship in 2009. Teams from West U also went in 2010 and 2011.
The team is 4-1 in this Series, with their 10-0 win of their first game against the East Division Champions, Edgewood Little League from Bristol, Conn. On Monday, the Seniors won with a 6-0 shutout of the Western Little League Seniors from Grand Rapids, Mich. An 11-3 win Tuesday over the Italian team from Emilia, Italy, was way more exciting than the score indicates, and the team had a small setback Thursday with their 4-2 loss to the Latin American champions.
West U has dominated the Series with amazing pitching and strong hitting.
In Monday’s game, West University starting pitcher Joe Gobillot and reliever Jimmy Winston combined to strike out 14 batters, tying the record for most strikeouts by a team in a Bangor World Series.
In Tuesday’s game against Italy, an eight-run explosion in the eighth inning led West U t to their 11-3 win.
West U scored in the eighth on an RBI single by Julian Cranfield, an RBI single by Jimmy Winston, an RBI single by Jacob Millender, a sacrifice fly by John Doxakis, a two-run single by Owen Holt, an RBI double by Williams James, and an error. Holt also racked up three RBIs on four hits for the Southwest Champions.
Officials of the West U Little League are making plans for a “watch party” for the championship game, which will be broadcast live at 1 p.m. on ESPNU.
