WULL Seniors Advance in World Series

The West University Seniors advanced Sunday in the Senior Little League World Series in Bangor, Maine, winning their first game against East Champion Edgewood Little League, by a score of 10-0.

This undefeated Seniors, who are the Southwest Regional Champions, will face the U.S. Central champs from Grand Rapids, Mich. at 8 p.m. (7 p.m. CDT) tonight.

Incoming WULL president Robby Winston said that John Doxakis pitched 4 1/3 innings, striking out 6, allowing 4 hits striking and walking one.  Jacob Millender came in to finish the job, pitching the rest of the 5th and the 6th inning, allowing one hit and striking out two.

WU put on an offensive display, recording 13 hits.  Doxakis led the offense with a double and two singles.  William James, Owen Holt, and Carson Maxwell each recorded two hits.

This is the fourth trip in six years to the Seniors Little League World Series for the West U Seniors, who won the championship in 2009, including 2010 and 2012.

The West U champs jumped out to a quick start. Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit in their 13-hit attack. Julian Cranfield led off at the bottom of the first with a lead-off walk and came in to score on an error. Later in the inning, Doxakis hit an RBI double to left, making the lead 2-1 after one inning.

The team continued to swing the bats, scoring three more runs in the bottom of the third, giving them a five-run lead after three innings. They put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs to end the game early, under the “mercy run rule.” Cranfield led off the inning with a triple to left, Jimmy Winston got on base with a walk, and Jacob Millender singled home Cranfield and advanced Winston to second base.

After the pitcher hit Doxakis with a pitch, to load the bases, Gobillot singled to centerfield to drive in Winston, and Holt ended the game with a single to left field. Other top hitters for West U were William James (2-for-3), Holt, (2-for-4, and 2 RBIs), and Carson Maxwell (2-for-4).


The Senior Little League World Series features five teams from the U.S. and four teams from other parts of the world.

The 2014 team is undefeated, under Manager Clint Sauls and assistant coaches Cape Bell and Parker Duffie.  The Seniors won the Southwest Regional Tournament earlier this week, defeating the Padre Island Little League from Corpus Christi, Tx.

The players on the WULL Senior Division team are Mitchell Black, Jared Burch, Harrison Burks, Cameron Cash, Aaron Cranfield, Julian Cranfield, John Doxakis, Turner Gauntt, Joe Gobillot. Andrew Hoffman, Owen Holt, William James, Carson Maxwell, Jacob Millender, Michael Streitmann and Jimmy Winston.

The games in the Senior World Series are held at Shawn T. Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Maine.

The WULL Seniors left Houston at 4:30 a.m. Friday and will participated in opening ceremonies on Saturday.

On Tuesday, August 12, the West U Seniors will play the Europe-Africa champs from Emilia, Italy, at 1 p.m. They will play again on Thursday, August 14, against the Latin America champs from Willemstad, Curacao, Netherlands, Antilles, at 8 p.m.

The Championship game will be played on Saturday, August 16. It will be broadcast live on ESPN.
