West U Park to Get Artificial Turf

February 14, 2012

Wier Park users will soon see artificial turf installed in both playgrounds at the park.

The West U City Council authorized the Friends of West U Parks Monday night to spend $23,000 on the installation of the turf. The city is contributing $40,000 for the project.

The parks board also approved the Friends decision to help fund the project during its Feb. 1 meeting.

The decision to outfit the park with artificial turf came nearly nine months after city staff started hearing complaints from residents about the rubber turf rubbing off on children’s hands and clothes.

When the rubber turf was installed in 2008, during a $160,000 Friends funded re-do, the turf was burgundy. The color wore off over time and is now black.

Parks and Recreation Director Tim O’Connor told the Friends and Parks boards this month that there are no safety issues with the turf material, but it does retain a lot of heat and also has a petroleum odor.

When city staff tried contacting the company that supplied the product they learned that the company had gone out of business, O’Connor said.

City staff researched several turf options and ultimately recommended artificial turf because the contractor and installer said they would do the project at cost.

O’Connor said artificial turf is the preferred choice amongst residents and staff.

The artificial turf has a nine year warranty and will be installed on top of the existing rubber turf in both playgrounds at Wier.

O’Connor said the rubber turf should not smell once the new turf is installed.

The city’s urban forester also said there would not be any problems with the installation.

Once the order has been placed, the project will take three to four weeks to complete.

O’Connor said the park will not close completely for the installation.
