West U. Rotary Again Donates $10,000 To After-School Program For Pershing Students
The West U. Rotary is the biggest donor for the second year to the Weekley YMCA’s Club Mid program, an after-school program for middle-school students. Since the program’s inception in 2007, the rotary has donated $10,000 each year to the program, which currently has 150 Pershing students enrolled.
Club Mid runs from the 3:45 p.m. – the end of Pershing’s school day – to 6 p.m. and costs $35 a month. It is free the Weekley YMCA members. The YMCA is able to offer the program at a low cost by funding it with money raised once a year through individual donors. Through fundraising efforts, the YMCA raised $257,000 in 2008, and will spend $40,000 to $50,000 of that running Club Mid.
The program is broken up into 45 minute blocks for students, and uses facilities at both the YMCA and Pershing. Blocks include activities such as sports, cheerleading, arts and crafts, homework and TAKS preparation. Three Pershing teachers, funded by the school, are available for homework help and TAKS preparation.
Weekley YMCA Executive Director Brandy Perryman says students can still enroll in the program.
“If we keep getting kids, we will keep adding staff,” said Perryman. “It is definitely needed in the community, and we are here to help.”
