West U Resident Voted Chairman-Elect of Little League International Board of Directors
Hugh E. Tanner, a partner at the Morgan, Lewis & Bockius Litigation Practice in Houston, was voted Chairman-Elect of the Little League International Board of Directors.
The appointment was announced today by newly-seated board Chairman Dr. Davie Jane Gilmour.
“Little League has always looked to maintain a diverse group on the International Board of Directors,” said Gilmour, who assumed the chairmanship today. “Hugh brings a wealth of expertise and experience to the position of Chairman. He is highly respected in his field, and since joining the board in 2007, has provided a profound voice in crafting the future direction of the Little League program.”
Upon Tanner’s election as Chairman in 2017, Gilmour’s term will expire and he be nominated for the chairmanship.
Professionally, Tanner concentrates his practice of law in the area of complex commercial litigation, with an emphasis in the oil and gas industry. For more than two decades, he has served as counsel for a global oilfield and information services company with a primary focus on the energy industry.
Tanner received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Mississippi’s School of Law in 1985, where he was managing editor for the Mississippi Law Journal. Prior to attending law school, he spent two years as a tax accountant with the international accounting firm of Price Waterhouse. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration, cum laude, in accounting from the University of Mississippi in 1980 and is a member of the University of Mississippi Hall of Fame.
“I have a genuine respect for the role and responsibility of chairman, and I am proud to be associated with an organization that plays such a relevant role in the lives of children,” Tanner said. “Volunteering at the local level as a League President, serving as a co-chairman for the Little League 24th Little League International Congress, and my time on the International board of directors, all have been uniquely-rewarding experiences. To be voted by my fellow board members as Chairman-Elect is distinct privilege and honor.”
Among his community affiliations, when not busy serving his clients, he enjoys spending his time coaching his son, Alec, in baseball and his daughter, Paxton, in softball. During his time as league president, Joni Hruska Fichter, Chris Simon and Michael Bennett founded the Challenger Baseball Program at West University Little League, which serves children with physical and mental challenges.
Tanner resides in West U with his wife, Pamela.
Gilmour, President of the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, Pa, is the first female to be elected Chairman in Little League’s 73-year history. She has been a member of the Little League International Board of Directors for six years, and succeeded outgoing Chairman Dennis Lewin of Wellington, Fla.
The Little League International Board of Directors, a volunteer board, is responsible for the management of the property and affairs of Little League Baseball and Softball. Little League, founded in 1939 in Williamsport, is the world’s largest organized youth sports program, with more than 2.5 million participants in all 50 U.S. states and scores of other countries.
The members of the Little League International Board of Directors are volunteers in this service to Little League Baseball and Softball. They receive no compensation for their dedicated work on behalf of the children of the world.
