West U Little League Challenger Grants Now a Reality

May 6, 2013

West University Little League has announced the implementation of the “West University Little League Challenger Grant Program.”

Thanks to the generous donations to the Challenger Scholarship Fund by the West U Rotary from their annual July 4th BBQ, the Crawfish Boil sponsored by a group of loyal families, and other donations over the years, WULL Challenger Division is now able to award grants to one family from each of the eight teams via a random draw.

This will happen each season and the $500 per player grants will be used for educational, medical, or therapeutic needs of each child.  The cost of raising, educating, providing healthcare and therapy for special needs children is simply exorbitant so to help these children and their families, even just a little, has been a long term goal and thanks to the hard work and dedication of many, is finally a reality.

The inaugural grant recipients for 2013 were announced at Challenger Baseball Season End Celebration and include: Dylan & Noah Alexander, Morghan Kubena, Tristan Benson-Ritter, Leonard Trahan III, Heather Jo Thomas, Tom Theriot, Ryan Smith, and Brennan Emeka. Additionally, funds will be used to send a team to the Shiner’s Hospital for Children Baseball Classic in Waco again this year on May 18th.  As always, WULL Challenger will represent District 16 well at the Jamboree.

Kylie Fichter, Lauren Flores, Dylan Miller, Madison Romero, and Cody Schwarzburg were recognized as Outstanding Senior Buddies as they graduate from high school and thus a program they have committed many hours to over the years.  Allison Fernbach, Jake Greenberg, AJ Peters, Jack Powell, and Aura Reina were recognized as Outstanding Buddies and they will return to help again next year.

Harbor Lights Choir entertained the Challengers, their buddies, families and friends prior to Challenger Director Michael Miller joining them to sing the National Anthem.  Emery Weiner School Baseball players were on hand to assist during four great games that were filled with hits, runs, and action packed plays then a post-game celebration was hosted in the West U Elementary School multi-purpose room.  Gary Bloom and Kroger donated all the drinks and food for a lunch that was prepared by Chef/Umpire Randy Bullard and the West U Rotary.

To wrap up the 2013 Challenger Baseball Season, the Fifth Annual Crawfish Boil was hosted by Marshall & Johanna Hefley, Robby & Laura Winston, Phillip & Julie Guyton, Gabe & Bizet Siegel, Scott & Elizabeth Fordham, Jim & Susan Tanner, Kelly James, Kevin & Leslie Lilly, Gregg Thompson, John & Kim Heck, Les & Tami Owen at Kay’s Lounge on May 5. It was open to the community and 528 pounds of crawfish were consumed.  More than $3,100 was raised with all proceeds directly benefiting the WULL Challenger Division once again. Tre Spa donated a gift basket and Mario Morales was the raffle winner.
