West U Hosts First Recycles Day
West U hosted its first annual “West U Recycles Day” on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Colonial Park.
The Lamar High School Jazz Band entertained the crowd while residents brought their charitable donations of household items, clothing, electronics, books, used sports equipment, eyeglasses, corks, pet supplies and unneeded medical supplies.
Charities that benefited from the event include the Bellaire Lion’s Club, Salvation Army, Medical Bridges, Better World Books, the International and Weekley YMCAs, and the Houston SPCA.
The event featured a recycled art contest that was judged by West U Mayor Bob Fry, Mayor Pro Tem Susan Sample, and council members Dick Yehle, Ed Heathcott and Joan Johnson.
The winners were Kevin Koy, Daniel Saco, Kimoni Hogen, Taysa DeMesa, Margaret Murray, Avery Bennett, Evan Muckridge, Morgan Fisher and Lisa Tate.
Nearly 90 individuals pledged to do more recycling, and in so doing, were eligible for a raffle drawing that included a $350 Gift Certificate to High Fashion Home, a $50 Gift Certificate to Calloway & Cornelius Nursery, a $75 Skeeter’s/Los Tios Gift Certificate and a $50 HEB Gift Certificate. There were also prizes for a scavenger hunt for children, and for the person guessing the number of bottle tops in a large glass container. Many local eco-friendly businesses participated in the event as well.
