West U. Elementary On 2008 List Of Texas Honor Roll Schools
The Texas Business and Education Coalition today released its 2008 list of Texas Honor Roll Schools and 18 Houston Independent School District schools are on the list, including West U. Elementary. That’s an increase for the district, which had 16 schools on the list last year and 14 the year before.
Other local schools on the list include Bellaire high School, Carnegie Vanguard High School, Condit Elementary School, Kolter Elementary School, Lanier Middle School, Pin Oak Middle School, T.H. Rogers Elementary School, T.H. Rogers Middle School and Twain Elementary School.
The TBEC Honor Roll recognizes schools that have demonstrated three years of consistent, high performance in all subjects compared to other schools serving similar student populations. The TBEC Honor Roll schools have the highest percentage of students performing at the state’s most rigorous standard, “commended” performance, in every subject. Less than five percent of the more than 8,000 public schools in Texas earn the honor. This year only 298 Texas schools made the grade.
HISD Superintendent Abelardo Saavedra said, “The evidence continues to mount that what we are doing at HISD is working. Earlier this month, we announced a record number of exemplary and recognized schools under the current Texas accountability system, and now there is this great news. HISD’s valued added system, which utilizes a high tech data base to track the strengths and weaknesses of individual students, has allowed our schools to focus in on the individual needs of each student early enough to effectively intervene.”
For 11 HISD schools this is the second consecutive year on the honor roll, and eight schools have made honor roll for the three consecutive years. The schools will be recognized on Nov. 10 in San Antonio at TBEC’s 9th Annual Honor Roll Celebration.
