West U Elementary Inspires Young Readers with Book Fair and Used Book Drive

November 20, 2012

The annual West University Elementary School book fair will be held Nov. 27, 28 and 29 at the Barnes & Noble on W. Holcombe.

West University Elementary school is collecting gently used children’s books to distribute to Houston-area children.

Teachers will do book readings starting at 4:30 p.m. each day. Illustrator Bill Megenhardt will be on site to draw caricatures Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday at 7 p.m., Carter Blackburn will perform a magic show. Wednesday at 5 p.m., children’s author Joe Sutton will sign copies of his new book, “Wanda and the Oblahas.”

Honeydew the Clown will do face painting and balloon animals on Wednesday and Thursday starting at 4 p.m., and musicians from Writers in the Round will perform at 6:30 p.m. Come buy books for your children, family, friends—or yourself. A portion of the sales goes to support the school’s library.

Volunteers will also be on hand to collect gently used books as part of the annual Book Drive. Last year, students and their families collected more than 14,000 books, which were then distributed to over 1,500 students at Rusk, Shearn, and Bonham Elementary schools based on reading level and interest. Please clean out your bookshelves before heading to the book fair. All-age children’s books, including pre-school, are needed.
