West U Election: Mayor Running Unopposed, Five Vying for Council Seats

March 1, 2013

Filing has officially ended for a spot on the May 11 West U City Council Election.

West U residents will elect a mayor and four city council members to serve a two-year term of office.

Mayor Bob Fry is running for re-election. He is the only candidate who filed for mayor.

There are five candidates in the running for the four council seats.

Mayor Pro Tem Susan Sample, Councilman Ed Heathcott, Councilwoman Joan Johnson and Councilman Dick Yehle have all filed for re-election.

West U resident and Friends of West U Parks Board Member Sonny Brandtner has filed for a city council position.

West U residents can expect some changes in polling locations on Election Day. The city has received approval from the Department of Justice to combine its polling locations from four to one.

All residents will vote at city hall, 3800 University, on May 11.

The city has also received approval for an exemption from having to publish election notices in Vietnamese and Chinese.

The two election changes are estimated to save the city $5,000.

The last day for a candidate to withdraw from the election is Monday, March 4 at 5 p.m.
