West U. Council To Discuss $13.8 Million Park Plan At Special Meeting Tonight
West U. City Council will hold a special meeting tonight to discuss the West U. Recreation Center/Colonial Park plans and possible zoning adjustments.
Council will meet at 5 p.m. at the Municipal Building’s conference room, 3800 University Blvd.
Russ Schulze, chair of the parks planning subcommittee, will present to council what is likely the final recommendation from the parks board concerning renovations to the Rec. Center and Colonial Park. Originally estimated to cost around $15 million, the latest plan comes in at $13.8 million.
The plan was approved by a 7-1 vote by the parks board at Wednesday’s Parks and Recreation Board meeting. The dissenting vote was cast by Helen Talianchich, who asked that the board present a $5 million option as well. Board member Charles May did not attend the meeting. Costs were lowered by cutting $200,000 worth of square footage and $300,000 in furniture and equipment at the Rec. Center.
Council should heat the first reading at the July 28 council meeting of the ordinance authorizing the Municipal Bond Election in November. Council will vote on the second and final reading of the ordinance at the Aug. 11 council meeting, and the bond election for the recreational facility redevelopment will be held Nov. 4.
Possible zoning amendments concern special exceptions, driveway and parking regulations and garages and maneuvering areas.
Council’s regular session will take place at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers.
