West U. Amegy Bank Closing
Amegy Bank, the only business occupying the 11,220 sq. ft. former JMH Grocery building at the corner of Rice and Edloe, will close Sept. 25.
The bank occupied about 2,580 sq. ft. of the building. Accounts will be moved to the Holcombe/Greenbriar Banking Center at 2303 W. Holcombe, and customer accounts will transfer automatically.
The former JMH building has been the subject of discussion since its closure, described by some as an eyesore in the West U. community. Rumors have circulated that at least one restaurant has shown interest in the property, but its location next to West U. Elementary would require a variance to acquire an alcohol permit. The city has not received requests for such a variance.
Former JMH partner Jim Reid is currently attempting to acquire a building permit to put a new grocery store directly down the street at 6203 Edloe. His plans submitted June 9 for Matthews Market were recently denied.
