West U Again Under Red Flag Warning Through 7 p.m. Tonight

October 19, 2011

Despite the crisp fall temperatures, the West U area remains under a “Red Flag Warning” for today because of heightened fire danger.

The National Weather Service issued the Red Flag Warning effective from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. today due to the continued dry and breezy conditions.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions will occur. A combination of strong winds, relative humidity and dry conditions will create explosive fire growth potential.

Winds will increase from the northwest to north to around 15 – 20 mph with gusts in excess of 25 mph. Winds should decreased quickly in the evening.

Relative humidity values should drop to around 20 percent in the afternoon before recovering to more normal levels this evening.

As a result, any fires that may develop will likely spread rapidly.
