Weekley Family YMCA To Celebrate 60 Years With A Week Of Special Events
The Weekley Family YMCA will celebrate the program’s 60-year anniversary July 21-26, with special events for families throughout the week, including an ice cream social, a book fair, a history trivia game, balloons for children and more. The week will end with a party from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. July 26.
Originally established as the Southwest YMCA on May 1, 1948, the organization provided programs conducted at the West University Community Center, the old Pershing Junior High School (West University Elementary) and a Junior College. Over the next 48 years, children would take swim lessons and gymnastics, receive child care through summer day camp programs, and participate in other YMCA programs such as Indian Guides, Hi-Y, Youth and Government, and Youth Sports among others.
In the mid to late 1980’s, the YMCA became a partner/benefactor of the Stella Link Redevelopment Association in an effort to revitalize the neighborhoods on Stella Link. Over the course of 15 years, donors and volunteers finally saw their hard work come to fruition with the demolition of dilapidated apartment complexes replaced with a senior services center, parks, a library and a YMCA.
On May 31, 2003, the Weekley Family YMCA officially opened at 7101 Stella Link Blvd. The 28,000 square feet, state of the art facility, serves the communities of Braeswood, West University, Southside Place, Bellaire and other neighboring subdivisions. The building is named for Rosalie and Weldon Weekley through a donation from their sons, Richard, David and Robert.
The former YMCA building, at 4210 Bellaire Blvd., was purchased by the City of West University Place to be used as a recreation center.
