Weekley Family YMCA Collects 600 Backpacks, 3,474 School Supplies
The Fourth Annual YMCA Operation Backpack collected more than 16,000 backpacks and 189,000 school supplies that will help 31,600 children and their families. Of those, 600 backpacks and 3,474 school supplies were collected from the Weekley Family YMCA.
Last year’s YMCA Operation Backpack’s donations totaled approximately 162,000 backpacks and school supplies.
“Thanks to The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the Karen and Jim Slack family, the Upper Kirby YMCA donors, the Kaleo Church, the West University Church of Christ and other generous community donors, we provided supplies for 600 children in need,” said Brandy Perryman, executive director of the Weekley Family YMCA. “Sometimes parents struggle and can’t buy their children’s school supplies. YMCA Operation Backpack helps ensure that all kids are ready for school,” he said.
The Weekley Family YMCA partnered with Bethany Christian Church that also served as a collection site. The YMCA of Greater Houston also worked with 56 parishes in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston to collect backpacks and school supplies and distribute them to children in need within their school system.
Backpacks and supplies collected during YMCA Operation Backpack are still being distributed to children in 31 Houston area school districts including HISD.
