Wave 12-year-olds end June tourney season with trophy
The West University Softball Association’s 12-and-under Wave team completed its first month of summer tournament competition last week by finishing fourth in the United States Fastpitch Association Texas State Tournament at Ford Field in Beaumont.
The double elimination tournament drew 40 12-and-under fast pitch teams from across the state.
After dropping its first game of the weekend, the Wave rebounded with seven consecutive victories Saturday night and Sunday to reach the tournament’s final four.
Unlike any of their tournament opponents, which are all year-round tournament teams, all eleven Wave players play softball from February to April for WUSA recreational league teams.
Summer tournament teams are formed in April and compete against other tournament teams locally, regionally, and nationally from mid-May to mid-July.
The Wave has placed in all four open tournaments the team has played since the conclusion of WUSA’s spring league season, finishing second (in a field of 13) at the USFA Swinging for Nationals National Invitational Tournament played May 11-13 in Humble; second (in a field of 18) at the USFA Women’s College World Series NIT held June 1-4 in Oklahoma City; and fourth (in a field of 18) at the ASA/USFA Angels in the Outfield State Qualifier played May 25-27 in Cypress.
Thus far this summer, the Wave has competed against and defeated teams from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Colorado.
The Wave has more tournaments on its calendar for the summer, which will end next week with the USFA World Series in Panama City, Fla. July 8-14.
WUSA is the largest girls recreational girls softball league in Texas, with over 500 girls competing on over 50 teams during the spring season.
WUSA plays its games on eight fields at three complexes in or near the West University area.
Registration will begin by Aug. 1 for WUSA’s “off season” fall ball program, which annually draws about 200 girls for recreational games Sunday afternoons in the 8 and under, 10 and under, and 12 and under age divisions.
