The dime store used to sell sewing patterns. Owner Cathy Irby still has pattern books in storage.

Ben and Alice Klinger opened Variety Fair 5 & 10 in 1948.
James Myers-Smith, a Houston resident, came into Variety Fair 5 & 10 for the first time after hearing that the store was closing. “I wish it was staying open,” he said.
Variety Fair 5 & 10 ordered 288 “Handi Holders” 30 years ago. They still have 30 for sale in the store.
The dime store’s cash register is one of the oldest items in the store and is still in use after 61 years.
Pictures of the Klinger family are on display throughout the store.
