Two West U Area Schools Competing In 9th Annual Tommy Tunes Awards

September 15, 2010

Episcopal High School and St. Agnes Academy are among 45 Houston area schools competing in this year’s Tommy Tune Awards sponsored by Theatre Under The Stars.

Theatre Under The Stars has announced the 45 Houston area schools competing in the ninth annual Tommy Tune Awards, including two from the West U area.

The two schools entering the competition are Episcopal High School and St. Agnes Academy.

Developed by TUTS in 2002, the Tommy Tune Awards honor musical theatre excellence at the high school level, celebrating outstanding student achievement in 15 categories.

During the 2010-2011 school year, a team of Houston-based theatre professionals will evaluate the participating high school productions. Winners will be announced at a Tony Awards-style ceremony to be held April 20, 2011 at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.

The awards ceremony will feature spotlight numbers from the nominated shows, as well as award presentations to the performers, directors, choreographers, orchestras and designers who have defined excellence throughout 2010 – 2011.

The Best Leading Actor and Actress will go on to compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York City next June.

Episcopal High School will perform “Into The Woods” Feb. 25 – 26 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. St. Agnes Academy, whose performance is to be determined, will perform Feb. 25, March 4 – 5 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.

TUTS’ Tommy Tune Awards are designed not only to acknowledge artists in musical theatre at the high school level, but also to encourage their future in the profession by providing an opportunity to win scholarships, compete on a national level and receive recognition from their peers.
