Two Warnings, No Citations Issued On First Morning Of Cell Phone Ban
West U. police issued two warnings to drivers using cell phones in an active school zone this morning. Today is the first day West U.’s school zone cell phone ban went into effect. No citations were issued.
The ban disallows the use of cell phone, including hands-free devices, during West U. Elementary active school zone hours, which are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-8 a.m. and 2:30-3:30 p.m.
West U. Chief of Police Ken Walker says officers use their own discretion when deciding whether to issue a citation or a warning. The citation carries a fine up to $200.
Officers also issued several warnings to drivers attempting to turn right onto Auden from University Boulevard during school zone hours. No right turns onto Auden are allowed during school zone hours in an attempt to help traffic flow in the front of West U. Elementary.
