Two Citations Issued For Using A Cell Phone In West U’s School Zone
The first two citations have been issued for using a cell phone while driving in West U’s cell phone restricted school zone. One citation was issued the morning’s school zone period on Sept. 2, and one citation was issued Sept. 3. The citations carry a fine of up to $200 for first-time offenders.
During the first day of school, also the first day of the new ordinance, six warnings were issued. Police continued to issue warnings throughout the first week. Along with the citation issued Sept. 2 morning, one warning was given during the afternoon school zone hours.
The ban disallows the use of cell phone, including hands-free devices, during West U. Elementary’s active school zone hours, which are Monday through Friday, 7-8 a.m. and 2:30-3:30 p.m.
Officers also issued several warnings to drivers attempting to turn right onto Auden from University Boulevard during school zone hours during the first week of school. No right turns onto Auden are allowed during school zone hours in an attempt to help traffic flow in the front of West U. Elementary.
A low-lying, moveable sign has been placed at the corner to remind drivers not to attempt to turn right.
