Storm update: School closings, flood warnings

The message to West U residents this morning is simple: If you don’t need to venture out, stay put.

It comes from the city of Houston and Harris County, which have activated their emergency systems to a high stage of alert because of dangerous roadways and rising water on the city’s bayous.

The worst news is that heavy rains are expected to continue well into Tuesday.

HISD has closed all its schools and administrative offices, also canceling afterschool activities. Other schools have followed suit, among them: St. John’s, Episcopal, Kinkaid, the Emery/Weiner School, Duchesne Academy, Post Oak, and Houston Community College campuses.

Flooding on bayous is also a concern. At 6:30 a.m., the Harris County Flood Warning System showed more than 4 inches of rain had already fallen along Brays Bayou at Stella Link and South Rice Avenue (UPDATED).
