In its latest update, the Texas Department of State Health Services has confirmed a total of six human cases of swine influenza in Texas.

So far, three cases have been confirmed in Dallas County and three in Guadalupe County. Guadalupe County is just east of San Antonio.

According to the DSHS, the earliest known illness onset date was April 10. The latest known onset date was April 24.

There have been no swine influenza-associated deaths reported in Texas.

DSHS said it continues to work with federal and local public health agencies in the ongoing investigation into the outbreak. The agency is also asking hospitals, doctors and others to be especially alert for other possible cases.

People are urged to follow standard precautions to reduce the spread of any respiratory illness:

–         Stay home when you are sick to avoid spreading illness to others.

–         Cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow or a tissue and properly dispose of used tissues.

–         Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and warm water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
