St. Vincent Students To Raise Money For Needy, Conduct Food Drive And More
Every year, the St. Vincent de Paul School plans community service projects for its students to teach “valuable lessons” about performing service for others. The school has already chosen projects for each grade level, pre-kindergarten through 8th grade.
According to the school’s September newsletter, the planned projects are:
Pre-kindergarten – Sing Christmas songs to the resident sisters in the convent on Bradford.
Kindergarten – Make/decorate Christmas and Valentine cards for the patients at the VA hospital. A coordinator from the hospital and a veteran will be invited to speak to the children.
1st grade – Bring in pet food/supplies to be donated to the Houston SPCA. A veterinarian will be invited to speak to the children about animal care.
2nd grade – Make/decorate cards for military personnel overseas who have family ties to SVDP. Get names from school parents, friends etc.
3rd grade – Complete projects to raise money for a mission in Mexico. This mission has been visited and supported by teachers at SVDP. The children will also help to purchase clothing and supplies for this mission.
4th grade – Prayer Partners are elderly shut-ins of our parish. Each 4th grader will be assigned a Prayer Partner and they will write to them throughout the year. This grade will also help straighten up the church after Mass and Stations of the Cross.
5th grade – Assist the St. Gerard Woman’s Guild to host the Healing Mass/Brunch that is held for the seniors of the parish. Help the 6th grade staple the flyers to paper bags for the CCSC Thanksgiving Food Drive.
6th grade – Collect the food for the CCSC Thanksgiving Food Drive. Load the cars so the food from the CCE, church and school can be transported. Go to the CCSC site and sort food.
7th grade – Collect money for school supplies to be sent to the SVDP mission school in Ecuador. Money will be raised through various methods. The students will also help collect and pack the supplies.
8th grade – Collect gently used and new shoes for the CCSC Back to School project. Go to CCSC in the spring to help sort and label the shoes.
