Shooting update, WU mayor speaks
The 6:30 a.m. shooting happened about a football field length away from the West University Place city limit. Thank goodness it is over.
West University police officers and paramedics earned every part of their salaries this morning. But so did the collection of other local police departments and paramedics who also responded to this catastrophe.
West University Place Mayor Susan Sample said, “(This event) demonstrates the effectiveness of the neighboring police departments working together through our mutual aid agreements.West University responders were able to arrive first and immediately address the situation. After Houston Police Department arrived in force, incident command was ceded to the City of Houston.”
WUPD arrived first at the shooting at 6:33 a.m., less than 120 seconds after receiving the 911 call. Then Bellaire PD and HPD arrived.
Both WUPD and Bellaire officers were participants in the gunfire. The identity of the officer who shot the fatal bullet has not been released.
West U paramedics treated the three victims with glass wounds and transported one shooting victim to the hospital. Bellaire and Houston paramedics also participated in the rescue effort.
A total of six people were taken to area hospitals for gunshot trauma. One victim is in critical condition, according to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Additionally, one is in fair condition and three are in good condition. One has been released.
Added Sample, “On behalf of myself and the City of West University Place, I extend my sympathy to the individuals who were injured. I am grateful for our West University Police and Fire Departments’ quick response without which this situation would have most certainly been much worse.”
