Steven Segal Seeks Council Seat

February 23, 2015

Today, 43-year West University Place resident Steven Segal announced his candidacy for the city council. Segal and his wife, Phyllis, live on Sunset Blvd.

Segal previously served on the city council from 2003-2007 and 2009-2011. He served as Mayor-Pro Tem from 2003-2005.

Segal received his B.A. in business from the College of William and Mary. He then achieved a M.B.A from Miami University and became a Certified Public Accountant. After a brief career as a C.P.A., Segal received a law degree from the University of Houston Law Center.

Segal is a retired partner from Fulbright & Jaworski LLP, now Norton Rose Fulbright US LLP.

“I am running because I believe I can have a positive influence on the next council,” Segal said. “I am satisfied that I contributed significantly during my other terms of service.”

Segal said he is returning to a political strategy he used in his previous council campaigns.

“I will not accept contributions, and I will not spend more than $500,” Segal said. “I won’t have any yard signs.”

Segal now has two grandchildren living in West U, and he devotes much of his time to them.

He has not taken a position on the city’s long-term municipal facilities plan.

“I haven’t really gotten into that. I am just not part of the discussion right now. I don’t agree fully with the negativity,” Segal said.

Segal said that issue might be resolved before the next council takes office.

“When the survey goes out, the citizen input will, hopefully, go a long way to seeing what the council does. I think it might be resolved, one way or another,” Segal said.

Segal said he decided to run for council again because “people were encouraging me to run.”

“I can do the job, and I am willing to,” Segal said.

Several candidates for city council have been outspoken opponents of the city’s long-range Master Plan for Municipal Facilities. The plan includes possible real estate transactions with West University Baptist Church, which plans to build a new Youth Center.

The last day for candidates to file in the election is Friday, February 27, 2015. Prospective candidates can get more information HERE.
