School Zone Cell Phone Ban Begins The First Day Of School

July 9, 2008

Enforcement of West University’s ordinance prohibiting the use of cell phones in school zones will begin the first day of school, Aug. 25. Before the school year begins, the city will place signs on University Boulevard, Auden and Edloe advising drivers of the cell-free zones.

The ordinance prohibits drivers from using cell phone, including hands-free devices, during school zone hours. The ordinance was enacted after the principal of West U. Elementary and the West U. Police Department asked council to consider the matter. According to West U. police, during the 2007-08 school year, police observed several incidents in which drivers on cell phones were not paying attention to children walking though the area.

Police ask that anyone with concerns, questions or complaints regarding the issue call Lt. Thad Olive at 713-662-5326.
