School is Back in Session: West U Students Return to Class
Today is the first day of school for West U Elementary and other public schools in the area.
About 200,000 HISD students are expected to return to school for their first day of classes today. About 1,240 students will be walking through the doors at West University Elementary School.
HISD Superintendent Terry Grier and members of the HISD Board of Education are welcoming students back to school.
“We are ready and excited to begin a new school year,” Grier said. “We have so much new to offer at HISD, from our new campuses and career and technical education programs, to our expanded dual language centers and our first ever Mandarin Chinese Language Immersion Magnet School http://ES.houstonisd.org/mandarines. We want every parent to know that no matter which school their children attend, they will receive a great education.”
West U Elementary’s first bell rang at 7:35 a.m. this morning. Students will be dismissed at 3 p.m.
Law enforcement agencies are urging motorists to be particularly wary not only in school zones, but also of students making their way to class.
Students returning to school may be distracted and not paying attention to traffic.
Speed limits are 20 miles per hour in a school area. West U police and other law enforcement agencies will be strictly enforcing all school zone speeds.
