Houston Independent School District Superintendent Abelardo Saavedra will by honored by the school board Thursday as Region IV Superintendent of the Year. His selection as the Region IV Superintendent of the Year makes Saavedra eligible to become Texas Superintendent of the Year.

A state committee will interview regional winners on Aug. 22 and 23 in Austin and select five state finalists. The Superintendent of the Year will be announced Sept. 28 at the Texas Association of School Administrators/Texas Association of School Boards Convention in Dallas.

Saavedra has 35 years experience in education and four years as the superintendent of HISD.
