River Oaks Students Donating To Mobile Food Pantry
Next week a nearby elementary school is testing out a new program that seeks to enlist schools in affluent areas, like West University Place, to “adopt” food pantries that serve less-well-off areas in Houston.
Each child attending River Oaks Elementary will bring canned food products to school every day from Dec. 7 to 11. The donations in the “We CAN Make a Difference” food drive will go to a new Houston Food Bank program called “Mobile Pantry.”
The Mobile Pantry will take the food to the parking lots of local disadvantaged schools, and deliver it to families in need. River Oaks Elementary’s participation will serve as a pilot for The Houston Food Bank to determine whether it can rely on schools in affluent areas to support food pantries to serve families in more disadvantaged areas of the city.
