Rice’s Reckling Named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week for Third Time this Season
Rice senior Matthew Reckling has been named a Conference USA baseball Pitcher of the Week for April 16-22 the league office announced Tuesday morning from its headquarters in Irving, Tex. UCF’s Travis Shreve was named C-USA baseball Hitter of the Week.
Reckling was sensational in the Owls’ C-USA win last Friday (April 20) against nationally-ranked East Carolina. The Houston native fired a complete game one-hit shutout in a 2-0 victory. He allowed just two walks and one hit batsman while striking out ten to remain undefeated at 7-0 with a 1.44 ERA. Reckling faced 29 ECU hitters and held the Pirates to a composite .038 batting average. Rice needed the standout pitching performance to win the C-USA duel by a 2-0 margin.
The weekly C-USA pitching honor is the third of the season for Reckling. The Owl right-hander was also named the C-USA Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 27 and on March 26. Earlier in the year Reckling’s Rice teammates Michael Fuda and Jordan Stephens were named the C-USA Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Feb. 27 and March 12.
Shreve registered a stellar week at the dish to help the Knights to four straight wins, including three on the road. He notched three multiple-hit games to go 9-for-16 (.562), maintained a .625 slugging percentage and stole three bases.
Rice is now 30-12 overall and holds second place in the C-USA standings with an 11-4 conference record. The Owls have no games scheduled for the upcoming week while the University is in its final exams period for the spring semester. The Blue & Gray returns to the field (and resumes the current 11-game homestand) on May 2 against local foe Texas Southern University. First pitch against the TSU Tigers is slated for 2 pm.
