Rice University on Sept. 25 celebrated the opening of the Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center, a new 103,000-square-foot center that is available for students, faculty, staff and others associated with the university.
The center was packed on opening day with students ready to sweat, and others who just wanted to lay eyes on the facility. In addition to other things, the new center has an outdoor-adventure area and rooms for fitness and dance classes.
Students wasted no time getting their workouts on the opening day. The weight and cardio rooms together total 9,000 square feet.
Many machines have monitors to watch programs.
Danny Tosantos said the new facilities are much larger and better equipped than the previous gym at Rice, but he's still waiting on a few weightlifting necessities like chalk.
The center has indoor and outdoor basketball courts, an indoor soccer and hockey arena, as well as racquetball and squash courts.
The recreation center includes this pool with fountains, and water basketball and volleyball. Another pool is geared towards athletics, with eight lanes and four diving boards.
