Reception for “Cool” New Art Exhibit
The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston invites people to an opening reception for a new exhibition featuring the work of Barkley Hendricks, whose bold, life-sized portraits of ordinary people’s attitude and style elevates the common person to celebrity status.
The reception for Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool is Jan. 29 from 7 to 10 p.m. The exhibition is the first painting retrospective of the American artist, and includes over 50 works from 1964 to the present. A series of photographic works by Hendricks from another exhibition will also be included.
Hendricks’s stylistic renderings connect the art movements of American realism and post-modernism while touching upon many of the art movements of the 1960s and 70s—pop art, photorealism, minimalism, even black aesthetic nationalism.
The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston is the final touring venue for the exhibition. It also traveled to New York, California and Pennsylvania. The museum is located at 5216 Montrose Blvd. in Houston. For more information, call (713) 284-8250.
