October 23, 2009

Former Rice All-Star pitcher and first-round Philadelphia Phillies draft pick, Joe Savery, has joined West U. Baptist and Crosspoint Church as an intern with the College and Upward Basketball Ministries.

Savery recently returned to Houston to pursue the completion of his degree at Rice after an outstanding year in AA and AAA baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies farm system, finished 16 – 6 and the first pitcher in professional baseball at any level to capture a twelfth win. Savery also was his league’s All-Star game AA starting pitcher this season.

“We are excited to have Joe serve alongside our staff this fall, utilizing his off season for the glory of God and further developing his leadership gifts,” said Roger Patterson, senior-pastor elect.

During his internship, Savery will assist West U. Baptist and Crosspoint Church in reaching out to Rice University students, assisting with the Upward Basketball youth sports program and holding baseball clinics for area little league players.
