Pershing Orchestra Performing Today At Heavenly Hats Parade
Today is the last day to donate to Condit Elementary’s second annual Heavenly Hats Fundraiser. Last year, the school earned a trophy for collecting the most money in the state for the Heavenly Hats Foundation. Students also collected new hats and caps to benefit the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
The school’s Heavenly Hats Parade will take place today at 1:30 p.m. at the school, 7000 South 3rd St., and the Pershing Middle School Orchestra will perform during the event.
The parade celebrates the conclusion of an annual student hat drive and fundraiser, which benefit both the “Heavenly Hats” Foundation and patients at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy or other medical treatments. All hats collected will be donated to M. D. Anderson, while all money collected will be sent to Heavenly Hats.
In 2008, the first year it participated, Condit earned a trophy for collecting the most money statewide for the Heavenly Hats Foundation. This Wisconsin-based nonprofit organization was created in 2001 by Anthony Leanna, who was only 10 years old at the time.
“Heavenly Hats helps patients feel better about themselves and gives them the extra courage and hope to win their fight,” he wrote on his Web site. “Hair loss during the battle of a disease can be uncomfortable, depressing, and at times even a little humiliating. The hat is just a small symbol of hope and love, but my wish is that it will have the power to brighten the patients day so that they can look to the future with a smile.”
General contributions will be accepted through today, March 13. Checks should be made payable to “Heavenly Hats” and mailed to Condit Elementary School (7000 South 3rd Street, Bellaire, TX, 77401). Donations will also be accepted online through PayPal at http://www.heavenlyhats.com/.
