Peeing in Public OK in West U

January 17, 2013

Many residents might be surprised to learn that it is not illegal to urinate or defecate in public in West U.

The City of University Park, a city in the Dallas area with similar demographics as West U, this week passed an ordinance to prohibit public urination and defecation in their city after noticing an increase in the last few years. According to the city council’s agenda memo, University Park “may be the only city in the state not to have such an ordinance.”

University Park is not alone. The City of West U does not have a similar law on the books either.

Last year alone there were five reported incidents of public urination and defecation in West U.

In 2012, a West U City Council member saw a person defecate in their front yard.

West U police also reported a similar incident in August where a resident found a plastic bucket in his backyard that contained human excrement and used toilet paper.

In October, a West U business called police because a man was urinating in front of the business in view of other customers. He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

In July, officers were on patrol in the 2600 block of Bissonnet and saw a man urinating in public. The man was taken into custody for disorderly conduct.

In February of last year, another man was caught urinating on Rice Boulevard around 10:30 a.m. He was also taken into custody for disorderly conduct.
