Owls’ Season Comes To An End With 6-5 Loss To LSU

June 18, 2008

Despite a 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Owls’ 2008 season came to an end last night as LSU rallied for four runs in the ninth inning of the elimination game at the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. The Owls’ final record is 47-15.

Rice had dropped its opening game of the CWS on Sunday to Fresno State. The team was making its third-straight CWS appearance in three years, but this was the first time since 2002 for Rice not to win a game in a trip to Omaha.

Senior Chris Kelley started on the mound for Rice and pitched 5.2 innings. Kelley was relieved by Cole St.Clair for the final 2.2 innings.

This season, Rice won at least 42 games for the 14th-straight year on the way to another Conference USA regular season championship. The team won a number of individual awards for their performance on the field and in the classroom. Rice had high RPI (rating power index) which allowed the team to showcase the renovated Reckling Park to record crowds for the Regional and Super Regional rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
