Open Door Mission Holding Annual “Toys for Kids” Drive

December 2, 2008

Open Door Mission, a recovery and rehabilitation facility, has kicked off its annual “Toys for Kids” holiday toy drive, which will run through Dec. 15.

The annual Toys for Kids holiday toy drive collects new toys and gifts for the children and grandchildren of Open Door Mission’s residents. Several Houston area businesses serve as drop off locations to collect new unwrapped toys and clothing for children ranging from infants to high school students. The donated items are collected by Open Door Mission and distributed to the residents for their children. Without the program, the residents would not be able to provide gifts to their children.

Currently the following businesses are participating in the holiday toy Christmas tree stations:

  • Bank of River Oaks – 2929 Kirby Dr.
  • St. John the Divine Youth – 2450 River Oaks Blvd.
  • National Mail Advertising Inc. – 2299 White St.
  • Baseball USA – 2626 W Sam Houston Pkwy N.
  • Kingdom Kids Learning Center – 1315 S Dairy Ashford St.
  • Women of Integrity Striving for Excellence – (St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church) – 1608 Gellhorn Dr.
  • The Flexitallic Group  – 6915 Highway 225
  • Oak Farms – 3417 Leeland St.
  • Rotary Club of Harrisburg – 7903 South E Loop
  • Champion Forest Baptist Church -15555 Stuebner-Airline Rd.

The following holiday donations are needed: new toys, clothes in infant to teenager sizes, children’s books, stuffed animals and other gifts that provide for children’s basic needs. These Christmas donations help Mission residents reconnect to their children and grandchildren.

“The holidays are a special time here at Open Door Mission. Our annual Toys for Kids Holiday Project is just one of our initiatives helps us spread holiday cheer and happiness to our recovering guest,” said Rick Hill, executive director of Open Door Mission. “This toy drive helps the men going through our 9-month recovery program by providing them with donated gifts to give to their children at Christmas. Ultimately, it is a great way to begin mending broken relationships between a father and child.  We are so thankful for all the support we receive from our generous donors every Christmas season.  Without it, the Mission’s Toys for Kids holiday Toy Drive wouldn’t be possible.”
