Open Auditions For The Nutcracker Scheduled For Girls 10-12 Years Old

September 18, 2009

For the first time, Houston Ballet will hold open auditions for The Nutcracker. The auditions are scheduled for 3 p.m. Sept. 26 at 1921 W. Bell St. in River Oaks. The audition is open to females ages 10-12 who are no more than 4’10” in height and have had at least four years of ballet training. Selected dancers will appear as Mother Ginger clowns in the second act of the famous holiday ballet. In years past, performers were selected only from the company’s school, the Ben Stevenson Academy.

“Houston Ballet is excited to involve children from the greater Houston area,” said Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy Associate Director Shelly Power. “This is one more way we can make Houston Ballet accessible to the community. Providing the chance to dance with professionals in Houston’s greatest holiday tradition The Nutcracker makes lifetime memories for each dancer.”

Up to eight young dancers will be selected to perform as clowns. Houston-area dance schools are also encouraged to participate.

All children auditioning must be able to commit to The Nutcracker’s rehearsal and performance schedule. Dancers must attend 14 rehearsals from 7-8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in October and November, and be able to appear in performances at 7:30 p.m. November 28-29.

For more information on the audition, contact Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy at 713-535-3210.
