Nation’s Largest One-Day Food Drive Benefits The Houston Food Bank
On May 9, Stamp Out Hunger!, the nation’s largest single-day food drive, will provide the Houston area an opportunity to support the Houston Food Bank with the help of Kroger, the National Association of Letter Carriers and Campbell Soup Company.
Leading up to the food drive, letter carriers will deliver nearly 600,000 brown grocery bags to local residents to collect items for the campaign. This year, the campaign aims to collect 500,000 lbs. of food locally.
Since the annual food drive’s inception in 1993, Stamp Out Hunger! has collected more than 909 million pounds of food. Houston and surrounding residents donated more than 400,000 lbs. of food to support the cause in 2008.
West U. residents can participate by filling the campaign’s distributed brown grocery bags, or personal hand-held bags with non-perishable food, then placing them near their mailboxes on May 9, prior to the time of regular mail delivery for pick up by area letter carriers.
It’s advised that residents fill the bags with items like canned soup and vegetables, pasta, rice and cereal. All donations collected will be delivered to the Houston Food Bank, a member of Feeding America.
