Name Change: Potbelly’s Petitions City To Replace Shipley’s Sign

The West U Building and Standards Commission will tonight consider a request to extend prior non-conforming status for a sign at the former Shipley Donuts property.

The West U Building and Standards Commission will tonight consider a request to extend prior non-conforming status for a sign at the former Shipley Donuts property.

Property owner Bob Orkin of Kirby Retail Fund Ltd. is seeking approval from the BSC for a special exception to the city’s code of ordinances to allow a ground sign to stay on the property at 5800 Kirby once the building is demolished.

The city’s ordinances require all structures, including signs, to be removed from the property during a demolition, Chief Building Official John Brown said.

Kirby Retail Fund wants to keep the existing ground sign the way it is and change the faces on it, he said.

The BSC will hold a public hearing tonight to “discuss issuing a special exception to extend PNC status to a ground sign,” according to the agenda.

The BSC will meet at 6 p.m. in the Bill Watson conference room of city hall, 3800 University.
